Frequently asked questions

What is Montessori material?

It is hands-on material designed for the child to use alone. Each object isolates a single difficulty (a size, a colour, a movement) and lets the child see their own mistake. It is set out on a tray or a low shelf, freely accessible.

Which Montessori materials should a daycare start with?

With the youngest, start with object permanence boxes, shape boxes and first knobbed insets. Next come sorting with a spoon or tongs, threading and screwing, then sensory materials and first numerals.

What is an object permanence box for?

It shows a young child that an object which disappears still exists: the ball drops into the hole and reappears in the drawer or the tray. It also practises deliberate release and hand-eye coordination.
